about

Written about my great grandmother. When she was 16 in Monaghan, Ireland, she fell in love with a protestant boy. Being Catholic, her father wouldn't have it, so he put her on a boat to the US. She landed in NYC in 1890 and stayed there for 6 years, later arriving in Alaska during the Klondike gold rush. While she told many a story about the family, she never spoke to anyone about her years in New York. So, I took it upon myself to write a song about what I think may have happened. It's more than just for her, but for all the other exiles that found themselves in this country and had to fend for themselves in whatever way the could.

lyrics

"...She was 16 years old and on far distant shores, she did what she had to do to get by. And it may not have been too pretty, but it was 1890 in New York City, and she was just another paddy off the boat..."
